Opportunities: which posts to update

Opportunities ranks the posts most worth updating and tells you why. Here's what each reason means.

A ranked list of up to 50 posts worth updating, biggest first. Each post gets its reason, the numbers behind it, one recommendation, and the estimated search clicks at stake every 28 days. How this is ranked at the top explains the order.

Why a post is on the list

Each post shows one main reason, plus grey tags for any others.

One Opportunities row with its reason and the numbers behind it
Each post shows why it's on the list.
  • Declining: it's losing Google traffic, more than the season explains.
  • Seasonal peaks: people start searching for it in the coming weeks, so there's time to update it first.
  • Low-hanging fruit: it's close to page one of Google for a search about this recipe.
  • Low CTR: it shows up well in Google but gets fewer clicks than your other posts in the same spot. The title or meta description may not be earning the click.
  • Moving up: it's already climbing, so a small update might help it keep going.
  • High ceiling: lots of people search for it, but the post ranks further back. A bigger lift, with more room to grow.

Update a post

  1. Pick a post and read its reason and recommendation.
  2. Let the Writer help. Type @ in a chat to pick the post, then try the Meta Description Creator, the FAQ Writer, or the Intro Writer.
  3. Update it on your blog, then log the update on the Updates tab or on the post's page.

Posts you've updated step aside for 90 days

Once you log an update, that post leaves the list (and Home's "What to update") for 90 days, so you're not told to update it again before the update has had time to work. Click Show posts to bring them back.

Why isn't a seasonal recipe on the list?

Opportunities flags seasonal posts 6 to 10 weeks before their peak, so you have time to update them. If a recipe is peaking now or in the next few weeks, look on Promotion instead. A post you updated in the last 90 days is also hidden; click Show posts to see those.
